What are the black streaks on my roof?
The dark streaks you see on most Orlando roofs are black algae, a type of cyanobacteria. Warm temperatures, humidity and a long rainy season help it spread. It starts in damp, shaded places and runs down the slope, which is why you often see vertical streaks on north-facing slopes and under oak branches.
The streaks are mostly a cosmetic problem at first. Left alone for a long time, algae holds moisture against the surface and can speed up aging. Moss and lichen are less common here but can appear on very shaded roofs.
- Asphalt shingle roofs show dark streaks and darker patches.
- Concrete tile roofs turn gray, black or green.
- Clay tile can pick up dark staining and moss in shade.
